P2: Immigration and mobility in mediaeval and post-mediaeval Norway

Appearance and composition of Y-STR Haplotypes in mediaeval and contemporary populations in Norway and adjacent Scandinavian countries

In the framework of the project “Immigration and mobility in mediaeval and post-mediaeval Norway” molecular genetic analyses were performed on a total of 97 pre-modern human remains including genetic sexing, mitochondrial and Y-chromosomal DNA typing. A total of 87 remains yielded interpretable DNA results. All DNA extracts that gave male genetic sexing results (n=49) were subjected to Y-STR analysis using commercially available Y-STR kits (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Promega). From these samples at least partial Y-STR profiles were obtained. YHRD searches of the pre-modern haplotypes yielded matches and neighbors. AMOVA was performed using the YHRD online tool on pairwise Rst values to create the corresponding MDS plots. For this purpose, the pre-modern haplotypes were grouped according to medieval and post-medieval origin and compared to contemporary populations from Scandinavian (Norwegian, Swedish and Danish), Northwest European and Northeast European populations. Both pre-modern populations showed small genetic distances to contemporary Scandinavians and larger distances to Northeast Europeans with Northwest European populations in between.

Data shall be used from YHRD

Now, more detailed comparisons between mediaeval/post-mediaeval and contemporary haplotypes (HT) are planned. For this reason, we kindly request access to Y-STR data of populations mentioned above, to perform further genetic tests such as the generation of evolutionary trees and networks. These analyses may provide a more differentiated picture of the HT variation in that region. Among other aspects, we would like to focus on HTs associated with Y-Haplogroups being rare in Europe, such as HG-Q.
